Affiliate History

The Ursinian Affiliate was founded in 2015, and initiated 13 members in the fall of that year. The Society was brought to Ursinus to fulfill a need for a co-ed organization that was not only dedicated to its members, but was also passionate about learning, sharing, and growing together as a family. The founding class of the affiliate embraced that goal, and succeeding in creating a close-knit, loving community within Ursinus.

Immediately after it’s founding, the affiliate succeeded in self-governing, forming documents, and meeting requirements above and beyond the expectations. The affiliate has been heavily involved with the national Society, sending delegates and members to events such as caucus, retreat, convention, and initiations up and down the East Coast. Members hold positions on the Undergraduate Parliament, and help with wider national projects, and contribute to the nation literary competition.

The Alpha Delta Phi Society

The Alpha Delta Phi Society is a self-governing, coeducational organization dedicated to cultivating character, scholarship, and enduring friendships. With seven active chapters and five affiliates, our literary society is one of North America’s foremost coeducational Greek-letter institutions. Our literary tradition fosters life-long intellectual growth, mentoring, and achievement among our members. The Alpha Delta Phi was founded by Samuel Eells in 1832 to encourage free thought and to supplement a rigid classroom education.

In 1992, after years of controversy over the status of women as members, the Alpha Delta Phi formally separated into two organizations: The Alpha Delta Phi Society, which accepts men and women, and the all-male Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity.

“[Alpha Delta Phi] must be built on a more comprehensive scale than other societies, in regard to its intellectual proportions; providing for every variety of taste and talent, and embracing every department of literature and science.”
- Samuel Eells, founder of Alpha Delta Phi, 1832
